Nadi Shodhana is a simple pranayama technique which you can do daily or which you can do before you go into meditation. (Prana is energy or life force, yama is to extend or to lengthen. With special techniques the breath which operates autonomously is influenced so the prana can be held or moved into different parts of the body). Nadi means channel and refers to the energy pathways through which prana flows. Shodhana means cleansing. In this exercise the emphasis is to even the flow of the breath in the right and the left side or the Pingela nadi and the Ida nadi.

For Nadi Shodhana take a cross legged position or a position where you can sit upright out of your hips, with the natural curves of the spine supporting the action of the body. Your posture should be easy and comfortable, allowing your spine to extend upward from a firmly grounded foundation.

Bring your right hand to your face, place your thumb on the outside of your right nostril, place your second and third finger between your eyebrows, place your ring finger on the outside of your left nostril.

First exhale. Open the right nostril, inhale for four counts, close the right nostril with your thumb, open the left nostril, exhale for four counts through the left nostril, inhale for four counts through the left nostril, close the left nostril with your ring finger, open the right nostril exhale for four counts, repeat for six times. In total seven rounds.

Benefits of this exercise: Prepares for meditation, opens the nostrils, and prevents cold or blocked nose, helps with relieving headaches and turns you inward. An exercise which on one hand opens the nostrils, right nostril Pingela and left nostril Ida, and on the other hand cleanses and balances the passage of the prana through these two nadis Pingela and Ida so the breath can move into the Sushumna nadi.
